Defining SEO

Davis (n.d.), in a book titled Search engine optimization: Building traffic and making money with Seoaffirms that Search engines like Google are advanced software technologies that have grown into massive corporations. Google, in particular, stands out as a giant in facilitating access to vast amounts of information available on the Internet.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. Davis (n.d) asserts SEO as the art, craft and science of driving web traffic to websites.

In essence, search engine optimization (SEO) involves optimizing a website to appear among the top results on search engines for specific keywords. Numerous factors contribute to a website's rise in search rankings. The most impactful method to attract a wide audience is closely linked to SEO, as it revolves around selecting relevant keywords for the website that users commonly employ when searching on search engines (Yalçın & Köse, 2011)

How does SEO work?

In an article published on the Mailchimp website is stated that Search engines play a vital role in delivering search results when users input their queries. To accomplish this task, they systematically analyze and comprehend the extensive web of interconnected websites. They utilize a highly intricate algorithm that evaluates and selects the most relevant results to present for each specific search query. The primary objective of SEO is to enhance your position in natural search outcomes. Various techniques are available for optimizing AdWords, shopping, and local search results.

Further, in the same article, it is stated that despite the apparent competition from various elements on search engine results pages (SERPs) that can push down organic listings, SEO can still be a highly effective and profitable endeavour. Considering Google's daily processing of billions of search queries, organic search results constitute a significant portion of a vast landscape. While there is an initial and ongoing investment required to establish and maintain organic rankings, every click that directs traffic to your website comes at no cost.
